TRACK

I remember a little about the track and practice football field. It was
probably Coach Doherty's idea as a way to preserve the game field from practice
abuse and a way from him to get his football players who did not play baseball
to run track in the spring for conditioning as well as competition. Everyone
will remember before it was built that there was a creek(as they say in
Georgia or branch(as I said growing up) that ran through the middle of it,
lined with twenty foot privet(which had been great fun swinging and climbing on
in elementary school). In the summer of 53, may have been 54, I helped work on
the field. On of our jobs was to get the huge culverts down the hill from the
gymnasium side without hurting someone. I remember that we placed a long pole
through the culverts and two of us would hold each end and try to steer the
massive things down the hill. I suppose all ended will as the field was
ultimately finished and the water ran through the culverts the entire length of
the field. What a clever idea to have the unused area turned into a track and
practice field.
I don't know much about the track. Fortunately for me, I never had to run on
it, but I always admired those who did. Maybe Bobby Hudson, Doug Burt, Cleve
Taylor, Charlie Hennigan, Gay Hardy, Roy Baggett or some of the track team
members during the 54 and 55 seasons would have more information.

in the creek where the football field was built. There was a a bridge over
the creek when we were in high school. The track field was built to the left of
the bridge. The football field was built on the right. Beautiful goldfish lived
under the bridge and they grew to be as large as the other fish in the stream.

Could the big guy with sun glasses be Coach Charlie Johnson?

Is he talking about the coach next to Charles Berry, I wonder?
.........................................................................................
This looks a lot like Charles Berry on the far left....do not recognize the next four men...looks like George Winford, Class of 1957, standing beside Coach George Doherty. George was most likely taking notes for the Tide Talk. Do not recognize the man to the far right. These other men may be coaches for the other team.
